Drawing cash safely at the ATM
Automatic teller machines (ATMs) are an easy way to withdraw and deposit money and for many other transactions. But criminals may try to get into your account during or after your transaction, so here are some useful tips to stay safe.
Be Careful with cash
Consumers are encouraged to take special care when withdrawing large amounts and take note of the following tips:
Try and have a friend accompany you.
If you are withdrawing money for your staff members, rather have them open a bank account and deposit the money.
Be vigilant and on the look out for any suspicious people.
Protect yourself:
Choose familiar and well-lit ATMs, where you are visible and safe.
Look around the area for suspicious- looking people before you go to the ATM.
If you think the ATM is faulty, cancel your transaction immediately.
If you need assistance, ask a bank official; make sure that the person you ask is not just posing as a bank official. A bank staff member will never ask for your PIN number, and will not ask you to swipe your card through a handheld card reader.
Protect your card
Have your card ready in your hand before you approach the ATM to avoid opening your purse, bag or wallet while in the queue.
Never force your card into the slot, as it might have been tampered with.
Don’t use ATMs where the card slot, keypad or screen has been tampered with; it could be an attempt to get hold of your card.
Be cautious of strangers offering to help; they could be trying to distract you so that they can get your card or PIN (personal identify number).
Follow the instructions on the ATM screen carefully.
Always shield the keypad with your hand when entering your PIN.
If your card is lost, retained or jammed, or you are interfered with at an ATM, call your nearest branch or your banks customer care helpline number.
