The announcement was made by the Prime Minister of India<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>Narendra Modi<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>in an unscheduled live televised address to the nation at 20:15<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>Indian Standard Time<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>(IST) the same day.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>[2]<\/a>[3]<\/a><\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>In the announcement, Modi declared circulation of all \u20b9500 and \u20b91000 banknotes of the<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>Mahatma Gandhi Series<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>as invalid and announced the issuance of new \u20b9500 and<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u20b92000<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>banknotes of the<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>Mahatma Gandhi New Series<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>in exchange for the old banknotes.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The banknote denominations of \u20b9100, \u20b950, \u20b920, \u20b910 and \u20b95 of the<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>Mahatma Gandhi Series<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> continued to remain as legal tender and were unaffected by the policy. The demonetisation was done in an effort to stop counterfeiting of the current banknotes allegedly used for funding<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>terrorism<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, as well as a crack down on<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>black money in the country<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>[4]<\/a>[5]<\/a><\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>The move is also aimed at reducing<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>corruption<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, drug menace and<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>smuggling<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>[6]<\/a>[7]<\/a><\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Under the banner of \u201c#FeesMustFall\u201d, multiple layers of advantage and disadvantage, of access and non-access, of inclusion and exclusion became apparent \u2013prompting for the need of a much deeper understanding of South Africans\u2019 lived realities of socioeconomic inequalities, as well as the obstacles and aids to social mobility,\u201d the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation, who conducted the survey, said.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The survey is an annual measure of public opinion on national unity reconciliation conducted by the non-governmental institution, which was established in 2000 in the wake of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, to ensure that the lessons of South Africa\u2019s successful transition to democracy remain fundamental principles central to government and society as the country moves forward.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The survey was conducted by randomly selecting households across the country with a sample of 2 219 respondents adequately representing the adult population of the country.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Findings regarding perceptions of having the required education to achieve personal goals show differences among racial groups, with 77% of white respondents, 56% of Indian respondents, 42.4% of black respondents and only 29.8% of coloured respondents feeling that they have the education they need to achieve their goals.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
